A Bilingual English/Spanish production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest

La Tempestad

Director Diego Sandino brought The Tempest’s tale of generational trauma and radical forgiveness to his ancestral home of Nicaragua. Naples and Milan became Managua and León, the mediterranean isle became the volcanic island of Ometepe, and Shakespeare’s poetry was heard in two languages. Mid-century Nicaragua was a perfect backdrop for The Tempest’s themes of colonialism, birthright, and old grudges coming to a head. It was a joy to learn about the culture and clothing of the present, past, and even ancient Nicaragua.
